The Choir's History

Whitsand Harmony is a well-established SATB (soprano, alto tenor, and bass) choir performing a diverse repertoire of music ranging from Mozart to Mercury. Adaptable for all occasions, the Musical Director tailors programs to suit events such as silver weddings, church gatherings, birthday parties, or fundraising concerts, often incorporating elements of fun and audience participation to enhance enjoyment.

The choir was founded in 1985 under its original name, St Germans Singers, by a group of St Germans' Church members who sought to explore music beyond traditional church hymns. Shirley Taylor played an instrumental role in the choirs early development, attracting additional members from St Germans and neighbouring areas.  When Shirley retired, Brian Hicks took the helm for a time before Ann Wills became Musical Director and served in the role until around 2019, during which time the choir continued to evolve and grow.

For many years, rehearsals were at St Germans' Methodist Chapel. However, with the increasing members joining from the further afield, the decision was made to relocate to Downderry. Along with the move, the choir underwent a name change, ultimately choosing Whitsand Harmony to reflect both the regional origins of its members and its four-part harmony.  Whitsand Harmony remains one of few choirs in the region that features both male and female voices across the four sections
