Whitsand Harmony
Whitsand Harmony
President Angela Bond
Whitsand Harmony is a well-established four part harmony (SATB) choir singing a wide variety of music from Mozart to Mercury. They are adaptable for all occasions and the Musical Director delivers programmes to suit all occasions be it a silver wedding, church event, birthday party or fundraising concert often introducing an element of fun and participation for the audience’s enjoyment.
The choir began in 1985, established by a few members of St Germans Church Choir who wanted to sing more than just church music, hence its first name of St Germans Singers.
Shirley Taylor was instrumental to the early beginnings and soon other people from St Germans were eager to join, with members also coming from further afield.
For many years practices were held in St Germans Methodist Chapel, but with changes, not least of which was the increasing number of members being recruited from the Downderry area, a move was made to Downderry.
With the move to Downderry a change of name was discussed and it was decided that Whitsand Harmony represented both the area from which the members came and also the fact that four part harmony is sung. We are one of only a few choirs in the area that have both men and women-singing soprano, alto, tenor and bass.
